Strokkur Geysir, located a convenient 50-minute drive from Reykjavik, is the most famous geyser in Iceland and is known globally. It is a highly active hot spring located near the Hvítá River in the southwestern part of the country and is a popular destination along the Golden Circle route.
In this area, visitors can explore boiling mud pits and over 100 smaller geysers. Strokkur erupts every few minutes, shooting water into the air for about 30 meters. The Geysir Center is open year-round, offering exhibits and educational presentations.
One unique experience is trying the “hot spring” bread, a type of rye bread that is baked underground for 24 hours. Another fun activity is assisting a chef in boiling eggs in a hot spring to enjoy with the bread.
