Age Requirements And Drivers License. To rent a car, you must have a full drivers license that has been held for a minimum of 12 months. You need to present your license at the beginning of the rental. For small cars, the minimum age requirement is 18, while for larger vehicles (vans), it is 21. However, if you purchase the GOLD insurance package, you can rent a regular car without having held a license for 12 months.
Credit Card Imprint. At AUTORENT.IS Car Rental, we take a credit card imprint at the start of all rentals for security purposes, even if the voucher covers the rental cost. This credit card is used to cover any additional charges, including extra insurance, damages, fuel, parking and speeding tickets, or any other costs incurred during your use of the vehicle.
Rental Period. The minimum rental duration is 48 hours. If you return the car more than 1 hour past the designated drop-off time, you will be charged an amount equivalent to one day’s rent.
Pick-up & Drop-off Service. For travelers staying in Reykjavik area accommodations such as hotels or guest houses, we offer free delivery of the vehicle to your door. For customers arriving at Keflavik airport, we provide pick-up and delivery services for a normal additional charge (free for rentals of one week or longer) to the International Airport and anywhere else within the Reykjavik area.
Traveling Abroad. Traveling abroad is not allowed at AUTORENT.IS Car Rental.
Car Types If the reserved car type is unavailable, AUTORENT.IS Car Rental reserves the right to substitute it with a similar or better vehicle.
Fuel Tank. The rental car is provided with a full tank of fuel, and it must be returned in the same condition. If the car is not returned with a full tank, a service fee of 23€ (~25$) will be charged for refueling, in addition to the cost of fuel.
Tax Value. Added tax (VAT) in Iceland is 24%.
Child Seats. In Iceland, it is mandatory for children to travel in safety seats. We provide child seats upon request, suitable for children aged from 6 months to 4 years.
Cancellation and Reservation Policy. A credit card number is required at the time of booking, and the customer is charged the full price. If you cancel more than 24 hours before the rental, you will receive a full refund (100%). However, in the case of a “no show” or late cancellation, the full amount will be charged.
Early Return. While early returns are allowed, we do not provide refunds for unused portions of vouchers or rentals.
Insurance. Third-party liability coverage, as mandated by Icelandic law, is included in your rental. This coverage extends to the individual driver’s liability as well. Personal accident insurance and third-party coverage are automatically included.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). The rental vehicle price includes collision damage waiver, which comes with a default self-risk of 350,000 ISK for regular vehicles and vans.
Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW). Super collision damage waiver is an optional add-on to the standard CDW. It reduces the self-risk to 150,000 ISK for regular vehicles and 200,000 ISK for vans.
Gravel Protection (GP). This protection covers damages caused by gravel or rocks thrown onto the vehicle by another car. It is available for 1000 ISK per day, with a self-risk of 15,000 ISK.
Theft Protection (TP). Theft protection covers theft of rental vehicles and is included in all waiver packages. There is no self-risk.
Sand & Ash Damage Waiver (SADW). To safeguard against damages resulting from powerful winds carrying sand or ash particles, we highly recommend obtaining the Sand and Ash Damage Waiver. These environmental elements can significantly harm the vehicle’s exterior. Without the SADW coverage, the renter bears sole responsibility for any damages caused by sand and ash storms. Given the unpredictable and often challenging driving conditions in Iceland, opting for SADW can spare you from unnecessary expenses at the end of your rental.
Liability Waiver (GOLD). To ensure your utmost peace of mind during your AUTORENT.IS Car Rental experience, we offer the Liability Waiver option, which guarantees zero deductions for any damages incurred on our vehicles. This comprehensive package includes all the aforementioned protections (CDW/SCDW, SADW, TP, GP) and provides you with a worry-free stay in Iceland.
However, please note that the following damages always remain the renter’s responsibility and are not covered by CDW, SCDW, or GOLD insurance:
- Negligence.
- Damages resulting from driving into waters, rivers, or off-road areas.
- Driving while intoxicated.
- Damage to tires, windscreen, and the underside of the car.
- Damage caused by the wind blowing up the door.
- Damage caused by sand and ash storms (applies only if the renter has not chosen SADW or GOLD insurance)
